Genealogy. Family History
Is anyone else interested in Family History please?
I love it. I have been doing it for 40 years.
I have found more in the last 10 with the internet, than the previous 30.
I have done both sides of mine and of my husband's.
If you happen to share the interest, do let me know.

Pen,
I have the interest as well. My mom's side isn't very interesting (they all came from Germany, her dad was 1st generation American) but my dad's side is the big question mark. I know someone did my dad's side I just have to ask about it...would help since I don't know his grandparents names...

Re: Genealogy. Family History
I had that Becky. My own mother died not knowing her Paternal grandfather's name. I eventually found it and that took me back 4 more generations because of a repeating Christian name being used.
My Dad's family were from Germany too and that has been HARD.
Grab that info from your relative, they have done some of the hard work for you...

Re: Genealogy. Family History
I plan to do it.
My dad's side...I've done a bit on. His father's side is the easier one. His paternal grandmother's line I can trace back to Scotland (I believe). I know that the paternal grandfather's line originated in England (somewhere) as I've seen a family coat of arms and a bit of history on it (apparently there was a family estate at one time). His mother's side is a total question mark. Can't find anything on that. And that's the one I'm more curious about.
One of these days I will.

Interesting Becky. If I can help you, or anyone else on here with UK stuff, do let me know. I have learned a bit in 40 years....
Feel free to send a few names and I can maybe point you in the right direction. Wouldn't take away the "chase" for you.
Family estate sounds good. All my lot were coal miners and bakers...

Re: Genealogy. Family History
Genealogy is one of my big interests and I've been researching my own tree and the wifes for many years. It all started when my daughter (now 26) had a project on family to do at primary school when she was about 8 or 9.
I've gone back to the 1600s on my father's side. Not so far on my mother's. My paternal grandfather was a carpenter and wheelwright on the Isle of Wight. Significantly my earliest ancestor was shown as John D son of John D, Carpenter, Chale, Isle of Wight in the christening records. My father was born on the Island and I was the first to be born off it. They moved less than 10 miles in almost 400 years!
My roots seem to all be from within the UK but I'm interested in what happened to family members who left for India, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. I know of relatives in New Zealand but can't make any progress with Canada and Australia yet.

Re: Genealogy. Family History
I'm currently subscribed to Genes Reunited for searches because it was cheaper. However, I've not been impressed and will go back to Ancestry when this subscription is up.

Re: Genealogy. Family History
John, perhaps we could swap details. I am all paid up to Ancestry, but only have the 1911 on Genes.
I am very happy to do any look ups you like from Ancestry.
I am a bit bored for now. Brick walls on mine....
P
BTW if you wrangle with Ancestry, they will give you a decent discount.

Re: Genealogy. Family History
Interesting subject.
Most of my heritage is German, but I have some Scottish in me. I believe on my mother's side we date back to the 1680's in "the colonies."
I have a thick book of family history that I'll have to check out and a family bible. One character became a high-ranking naval officer in the U.S. Navy in the early 1800's.
I'd really like to track down more on my dad's side. I have a real interest in military history.
Great topic!

Re: Genealogy. Family History
Sounds like an interesting family history Marc.
Make the same offer to you for anything that might be "English". Happy to do look ups. It is my BIG hobby, keeps me going....
But if you have a thick book, sounds as if someone already did all the hard work...

Re: Genealogy. Family History
i'll have to dig for the "book." i had it on one of my book racks but it's gotten moved somewheres.
i even did a bit of looking around and found that my Scottish/English relatives are all over the place--even Australia.

Be interested to hear Marc, and the offer of any "help" still stands,..
Re: Genealogy. Family History
I love genealogy, I have traced three branches of my family to England, going as far back as late 1600's with the Triplett side of my family. I also have a MacNeil side from Scotland. I do enjoy it, and now I am trying to do my mom's , they are from mountains in Kentucky, where they had few records, but with church's cradle roll, I am finding some stuff. It is a lot of fun looking, and you make new friends from distance related relatives.

Re: Genealogy. Family History
Oregonian. Irish research is hard and expensive. So many records were lost. I have a big brick wall on my maternal grandmother's line. If you go to the 1700s you have done a Hell of a lot better than me.
I have subs to several sites, and accept that, for me, unable to travel I have no choice but to pay, but I know where you are coming from. However I have been doing this 40 years and the internet has helped so much. People share a lot and that can save a lot.
That is why I have offered help on the other thread on this topic.
If I have anything that might help, you are welcome.

Re: Genealogy. Family History
Still well done though. I havent managed to even find a marriage and we are talking 1860s.....
Re: Genealogy. Family History
I'd love for you to do research on my dad's side but I can't get past my great-grandfather (which I know was here in the states)....can't find nothing. That's the line that is English and there's nothing...his wife...I can get back to Scotland in 1600's but nothing on him. My father's mother...another total question mark.

Re: Genealogy. Family History
Have you heard about the place you can send your DNA and they will come up with your genealogy. My family did it and we got the Richmond side of the family back to the Mayflower and to England.
