Are your migraines genetic?
Do you have a family genetic link?
I do not, and despite many telling me I will find one somewhere, I cant.
My neuro disagrees and says there is not always a link in migraine.
But there can be a quirk in the genes that rears it's head in some people, and not always as migraine.
I have an uncle who had vertigo, but even that could easily be coincidence he said.
We do have IBS in our family. It isnt rampant, but several people of both sexes including myself and my eldest daughter have it.
Perhpas, this so called co morbid is my genetic link...

Re: Are your migraines genetic?
My mom had migraines and so did my grandma, and my daughter and grandson also have them. I do believe it is genetic, we do not all have the same kind of headaches but they are all painful

Re: Are your migraines genetic?
Sounds as if you definitely have a genetic link Jan.
As they have been working on, and have to some extent found a migraine gene. Your family may be some of the first to benefit from this.

Re: Are your migraines genetic?
I absolutely have one.
My grandmother, my cousin and myself have exactly the same symptoms, triggers and type of pain.
My cousin and I feel "lucky" as today we have the right abortives and suffer only partially.
Grandma was a young woman during WW2 when even aspirin was hard to find. She used to spend 3 days in bed with horrible pain and vomit at each migraine. Once she told me that she felt so lousy that sometimes, during war alarms, when all the population ran down into refuges, she could not stand up and risked her life in her bed while bombs were launched by enemies.....

Re: Are your migraines genetic?
YOur poor Grandma Anto.
I have often thought about that. When I watch war time films and when my mum would tell me about those days....she was in the army....
HOW would I have coped?
I struggle to cope now, but I would have been like Grandma I think.

My dad had migraines.......my brother, sister and I all have migraines but different symptoms. I have basilar migraines, my brother has no aura symptoms just pain and my sister just has visual disturbances - when a migraine hits the lower half of her vision is gone - just sees white. My daughter and nephew so far are the "lucky" ones who also have migraines.

Re: Are your migraines genetic?
Wow Leslie, you didnt stand much chance did you?
Poor you. And right to your daughter as well.
I, as you know have no connection, but my daughter is getting menstrual headaches, and my cousins girl is getting the same BUT her mother (my cousin's wife) has them, as does her brother, so that is probably her line, not mine. My cousin has 3 siblings and between them they have 5 kids, and no migraines at all.
I am still puzzling.

Re: Are your migraines genetic?
My mother had them and my brother has a terrible time. But I had nothing until I was 46. I think there has to be more to this than genetics, or I would have had them at a much younger age.

Re: Are your migraines genetic?
I read an article, but dont know where, which suggested that it was a combination of nature and nurture MG.
Families on the whole eat together as well as just share genetics, there was a lot more in it and I wish I could recall.
Clearly it cant be just genetics, but for some of us (me) it seems there is no connection there.
There has to be something more....but what??

Re: Are your migraines genetic?
My mother got her headaches at age 9. She still has them today at age 85. There goes my hope of having them diminish in my upper 50's -lower 60's due to after menopause.
My older daughers gets them often but will take no medications for them. Only twice has she gotten blinding headaches where she would take anything.
That is when I get the "how can you stand this everyday???!!!" I get that from my husband when he has a bad one once in a blue moon.

Re: Are your migraines genetic?
Apparently KM. Even though your mum still has them (sorry to hear that), you may get rid of them.
