Migraines and weight???

I wish they would spend more time figuring out the migraines than studying the above.
For one thing, have they considered the drugs they prescribe for the migraines might be the culprit and nothing to do with eating habits? Didn't even mention that. It is just wasted reading.

I agree. How does this help us??
And the drugs would amount quite a bit of weight gain I hear.

Re: Migraines and weight???
Most preventatives cause weight gain. One exception is Topamax which takes away your appetite.

Re: Migraines and weight???
I gained 40 lbs on Lyrica but my Neuro would not admit that is what caused the weight gain even though weight gain is one of the primary side effects! She was blaming it on a med I had been taking for over 4 years without any weight gain. My GP is the only doctor I trust.
So yeah, I was fat and having a lot of migraines.... and I've been thin most of my life and had lots more migraines. I do not think there is any correlation at all between weight and migraines. Any weight issues are incidental or caused by the meds in my opinion.

Re: Migraines and weight???
I have a hard time with my weight anyway, but laying around all day with a migraine sure doesn't burn any calories. I can't get out and walk and get lots of exercise. And I always like to drink soda to settle my stomach but can't drink sugar free. Also, it's harder to get up and make better meals when I have a migraine. So for me, I think it really does affect my weight.

Re: Migraines and weight???
Cathy - I think the issue isn't the migraine though. It is the not getting exercise, soft drinks and not eating right. Under those circumstances without migraines, the weight issue would be the same. The migraines might be causing these "conditions" but are not causing the weight gain. If you are taking any preventatives, now they definitely cause weight gain regardless of exeycise, eating, etc. You might consider going off of them if they are not helping considerably.

Re: Migraines and weight???
I was thin all my life and could not gain weight no matter what I ate. Since the migraines, I have put on quite a bit. I don't know if it's the meds, the reduction in exercise and activity level, or just middle age catching up with me. Probably all three.

Re: Migraines and weight???
I am not on preventatives right now but I've gained weight in February because I've had 20 attacks and each attack means to take Cafergot which in the beginning causes nausea but after a couple of hours makes me crave all types of junk foods and makes me hungry like a wolf.
Hate this disease....

Re: Migraines and weight???
I don't like anything that alters the natural function of the body whether it is preventatives or birth control. I won't take any medication anymore unless it is doing me a huge favor (like my Migranol). Any side effects from that are more normal than the migraine. I think way too many people are way too over medicated (in the US anyway). I'm glad we have access to try everything but we have to take it upon ourselves to decide whether we really need it.

Re: Migraines and weight???
Ann004,
you said it very well.
I don't want to take anything but my cafergot.
I find it absurd to try and try preventatives and other crap and the end up to take ALSO cafergot.
I have decided to cut down meds and - at least - during the days when I have no migraine I feel normal and healthy.

Re: Migraines and weight???
See the anti depressant they have suggested for me. Two people close to me had it, and both gained weight. ONe was my daughter and I know she didnt eat any more than usual because she is living her at the moment. (recession victim).
I would like to resolve my anxiety in another way.
I HATE drugs. I get all the side effects.

Re: Migraines and weight???
Anti depressants are weight gainers. I wouldn't take them unless you were really clinically depressed. It isn't normal to have your body gain weight in this manner. Everyone I know on anti depressants gained weight.

Re: Migraines and weight???
Actually I didn't.
No anti-depressant caused me weight gain.
It's weird and I can't find any explanation for it, but I swear that I never gained a single pound on anti-depressants.

Re: Migraines and weight???
Maybe it is just certain ones or maybe it doesn't affect everyone that way. It seems to be a major complaint though. I don't have a weight problem, but if I am going to gain weight it is going to be from eating lots and lots of good crappy food and having fun doing it, not from a "preventative" drug that isn't doing anything else. What a wased way to gain weight
